FrameThrower

Search film stills by shot description for lookbooks, moodboards and pitch references

FrameThrower is a searchable library of film and anime stills, indexed by lighting, lens, shot size, colour and mood. Filmmakers use it for lookbooks, moodboards and previs references, and developers reach it through a REST API, an npm SDK, a remote MCP server and a ComfyUI node. Frames are for reference and pitching only; rights stay with the film owners.

Why it stands out

What makes FrameThrower different

  1. 01

Shot-level search by description plus structured filters for lighting, lens, shot size, colour and mood, rather than keyword or title search

  2. 02

Developer access in four forms (REST API, npm SDK, remote MCP server, ComfyUI node), where most stock libraries offer only a website or a plain API

  3. 03

Depth and pose maps for a frame come from a public depthUrl with no token and no credits, and the ComfyUI outputs for depth, pose and lineart are free

  4. 04

Pay-as-you-go API credits at $20 per 20,000 that never expire, with 2,000 free credits for new accounts and no card required

  5. 05

Explicit reference-only licence: the rights position is stated plainly, unlike most stock sites that sell clearance

The Feature

About FrameThrower

FrameThrower lets you describe a shot in plain language, for example a lone figure in neon rain, and returns film stills that match the look. Results can be filtered by cinematography attributes such as lighting, lens, shot size, colour and mood, and gathered into moodboards that you share with a link. A lookbook builder turns a script into a scene-by-scene visual board for a pitch.

The current product has four access routes: a web app, a REST API with eleven endpoints on a Bearer token, an npm package called framethrower-ai that wraps those endpoints, and a remote MCP server at framethrower.ai/mcp that connects Claude Code, ChatGPT and Cursor over OAuth 2.1 with nothing to install. A ComfyUI Reference Node returns the frame plus depth, pose, lineart and prompt outputs for use in a graph. The site did not show a dated changelog, so the 2026 changes are not listed here.

The catch is rights. The site says FrameThrower does not own the frames and that all rights remain with their owners. Its intended-use page allows study, teaching, private moodboards and pitch decks labelled as reference, and says commercial use such as ads or anything sold needs the owner's permission and is not indemnified. It fits previs and pre-production, not finished deliverables.

Key Features

  • Search film stills by plain-language shot description, e.g. a lone figure in neon rain
  • Browse and filter by cinematography attributes: lighting, lens, shot size, colour, mood
  • Image-similarity and colour search (API endpoints /search/image and /search/color)
  • Moodboards for arranging frames by scene, sequence or look, shared by link
  • Lookbook builder that turns a script into a scene-by-scene visual board
  • REST API with eleven endpoints and Bearer-token auth; no rate limits stated
  • npm package framethrower-ai wrapping every endpoint, with TypeScript types
  • Remote MCP server at framethrower.ai/mcp with four tools and OAuth 2.1 sign-in
  • ComfyUI Reference Node with image, depth, pose, lineart and prompt outputs
  • Public depth maps (depthUrl) that need no token and no credits
The Verdict

When to reach for it — and when to skip

Reach for it when…

  • Search by the look itself, so you do not need to know the film title
  • Depth, pose and lineart outputs in the ComfyUI node are free; only the search costs credits
  • Pay-as-you-go API credits never expire, and new accounts get 2,000 free
  • MCP server connects an AI assistant without managing an API key
  • The free plan is usable for exploring before paying

Skip it when…

  • Frames belong to film studios and rights holders; commercial use needs their permission and FrameThrower gives no indemnity
  • Resolution is unclear: the site says stills are reduced resolution, while the API describes imageUrl as full-size original
  • No named operating company, dated changelog, or readable refund or cancellation terms were found
  • Free plan caps HD downloads at 20 per month and image searches at 10
  • Not a licensed stock library, so frames cannot be cleared for finished ads or client deliverables

Best For

✓ Ideal for

  • Previs and pitch decks where a director needs to see a look before shooting
  • Lookbooks built from a script for a development or financing meeting
  • Shot references for DPs and gaffers, shared through a moodboard link
  • Developers wiring film references into AI agents over MCP or into ComfyUI graphs

✗ Not built for

  • Final deliverables, paid ads, or anything sold to a client
  • Training or fine-tuning models on frames, which the intended-use page prohibits
Field Notes

Working Tips from Filmmakers Using FrameThrower

  1. 01 Label every frame as reference or temp visuals in the deck, as the intended-use page asks, and keep stills out of the final cut
  2. 02 Start on the Free plan (50 searches a day). Pro is $84 a year billed yearly, worth it only if you need more than 20 HD downloads a month
  3. 03 In ComfyUI, only search costs credits. Depth, pose and lineart are free, and re-queuing an unchanged graph is not charged again
  4. 04 Use the public depthUrl for blocking references: it needs no token and no credits
