Generate Editable 3D Characters from Text and Images with Wonder 3D

Autodesk has integrated the Wonder 3D generative model into Flow Studio to streamline the creation of production-ready assets. This update allows creators to bypass manual modeling for initial drafts and move straight into rigging and animation.

Autodesk Flow Studio

Autodesk recently announced the integration of Wonder 3D into Flow Studio, its cloud-based media and entertainment platform. This new generative AI model allows artists to create 3D characters and objects using text descriptions or 2D image references. By automating the foundational steps of 3D modeling, the tool aims to reduce the time spent on manual asset creation during pre-production and look development.

What's new

The primary addition is the Wonder 3D model, which focuses on generating high-fidelity geometry that remains functional within a professional pipeline. Unlike basic 3D generators that produce static, unoptimized meshes, this model focuses on creating assets that are structured for further refinement.

Key capabilities include:

  • Text-to-3D generation: Create complex characters and props by describing them in plain language.
  • Image-to-3D conversion: Upload a single 2D concept sketch or photo to generate a corresponding 3D model.
  • Editable topology: The generated assets are designed to be compatible with standard DCC (Digital Content Creation) tools, allowing for manual adjustments to the mesh.

How it fits your workflow

For character designers and environment artists, Wonder 3D serves as a sophisticated starting point for asset creation. Instead of starting with a digital clay sphere or a primitive box, an artist can generate a base mesh that matches their concept art in seconds. This is particularly useful for background characters or prop sets where manual modeling from scratch would be time-consuming.

In a professional pipeline, this tool bridges the gap between the concept art phase and the technical modeling phase. Once the model is generated in Flow Studio, it can be brought into Maya or 3ds Max for retopology, rigging, and texturing. This puts it in direct competition with other AI-assisted modeling tools like Meshy or Luma AI, but with the added benefit of being natively integrated into the Autodesk ecosystem.

Filmmakers and animators working on tight schedules can use these generated assets to quickly populate scenes for previz or layout. Because the output is intended to be editable, it avoids the common pitfall of AI tools that produce "black box" assets which cannot be modified by technical directors or VFX artists later in the process.

What it costs / how to try it

Wonder 3D is available as part of the Autodesk Flow ecosystem. Users with access to Flow Studio can explore the generative capabilities within their existing project environments. For specific licensing requirements and regional availability, visit the Autodesk Flow product page.
