Blackmagic Camera 10.2 Adds Phase Detect Autofocus to PYXIS 6K

Blackmagic Design released the Camera 10.2 update, bringing phase detect autofocus and direct Cloud stream routing to the PYXIS 6K. Cinematographers gain more reliable tracking for moving subjects and faster handoffs for remote editorial teams.

Blackmagic Design released the Blackmagic Camera 10.2 update, bringing phase detect autofocus (PDAF) and integrated Cloud stream routing to the Blackmagic PYXIS 6K. This firmware shift marks a significant change for the box-style camera, moving it away from reliance on contrast-based focus systems toward a more responsive tracking method. The update also integrates the camera directly into the Blackmagic Cloud ecosystem for live streaming and remote monitoring.

What's new

Blackmagic Camera 10.2 introduces phase detect autofocus for the PYXIS 6K, a feature that uses dedicated pixels on the sensor to calculate distance rather than searching for contrast. This results in faster, more accurate focus acquisition that does not "hunt" or overshoot the subject. The update also enables support for Blackmagic Cloud stream routing, allowing the camera to send a live feed directly to the cloud for remote viewing or distribution without requiring external encoders.

In addition to the PYXIS 6K improvements, the 10.2 firmware includes general stability fixes and performance optimizations for the Blackmagic Cloud workflow. As of February 2025, users can manage these streams through the Blackmagic Cloud website, routing the camera signal to multiple destinations simultaneously. This update follows the recent trend of bringing cinema-grade sensors into more automated, run-and-gun environments where manual focus pulling isn't always feasible.

How it fits your workflow

Blackmagic Camera 10.2 changes the utility of the PYXIS 6K for solo operators and documentary filmmakers. By adding phase detect autofocus, the camera becomes a more viable alternative to the Sony FX6 or Canon C70, both of which are known for reliable autofocus systems in fast-moving scenarios. While cinema purists often prefer manual follow-focus kits, the addition of PDAF allows editors to trust that footage from gimbal or drone shots will remain sharp without a dedicated focus puller.

The Cloud stream routing feature specifically benefits DITs and remote producers. Instead of tethering the camera to a laptop or using a third-party Teradek setup, the PYXIS 6K can now stream directly to a director in another city via Blackmagic Cloud. This mirrors the camera-to-cloud capabilities found in the Frame.io integrations for the Fujifilm X-H2S or the native cloud features in the RED V-RAPTOR, but keeps the footage within the DaVinci Resolve ecosystem for immediate editing and grading.

What it costs / how to try it

Blackmagic Camera 10.2 is a free firmware update for all existing PYXIS 6K owners. Users can download the update from the Blackmagic Design support page and install it by connecting their camera to a computer via USB-C and running the Blackmagic Camera Setup utility.
